Why Consistent Brushing Is the #1 Way to Prevent Painful Matting

Consistent Brushing

CONSISTENT BRUSHING

If you’ve ever picked up your pup and felt a tight knot hiding under that fluffy coat… you already know, mats don’t just “happen overnight.”

They build quietly.

A little loose hair.
A little moisture.
A little friction from a harness or collar.
And before you know it, there’s a tight tangle sitting close to the skin.

As groomers, matting is one of the most common coat issues we see, and it’s also one of the most preventable.

Consistent brushing is the single best way to protect your dog’s comfort, skin health, and coat integrity.

What Is Matting — and Why Does It Matter?

Matting happens when loose or shed hair gets tangled and packed tightly against the skin. Over time, those tangles tighten, pull, and restrict airflow.

The American Kennel Club(hyperlink) (AKC) explains that regular brushing removes debris, prevents matting, controls shedding, and keeps the coat healthy and shiny:

When mats are left untreated, they can:

  • Trap moisture and bacteria
  • Cause redness and painful sores
  • Hide fleas or ticks
  • Restrict movement
  • Make brushing (or even petting) uncomfortable

In some cases, mats have to be shaved for humane reasons, even when we all would’ve preferred to keep that longer style.

And I promise… we never recommend that lightly.

Why Mats Form Faster Than You Think

A lot of pet parents assume matting only happens if grooming is skipped for months. Not true. Some coats can mat in days.

Here’s why:

🐾 Coat Type

Curly, wavy, doodle, poodle, spaniel, long-haired, and double coats mat more easily. Fine hair especially loves to tangle.

🐾 Moisture

Rain. Snow. Swimming. Drool. Humidity.
Hair expands when wet and tightens as it dries, locking tangles in place.

🐾 Friction

Behind the ears. Under the legs. Around the collar.
Harnesses and even sleeping positions create high-friction areas.

🐾 Seasonal Shedding

This time of year is a big one. As winter coats blow out, loose undercoat gets trapped under the top layer. If it’s not brushed out, it turns into compacted matting quickly.

Preventive Vet(hyperlink) explains that mats can painfully pull at the skin and even restrict movement: https://www.preventivevet.com/dogs/how-to-care-for-your-dogs-coat

The Role of Consistent Brushing (It’s Not Just About Looks)

Brushing isn’t cosmetic. It’s preventative care.

When done correctly and consistently, brushing:

  • Removes loose hair before it tangles
  • Distributes natural oils
  • Improves circulation
  • Lets you catch small knots early
  • Extends time between full haircuts

The ASPCA notes that brushing “spreads natural oils throughout the coat, keeping the skin healthy and preventing tangles.” https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/dog-grooming-tips

Healthy skin = healthier coat.

How Often Should You Brush?

There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule, but here’s a simple guide:

  • Curly or wavy coats: Daily or every other day
  • Long, fine coats: Every 1–2 days
  • Double coats: 2–3 times per week
  • Short coats: Weekly brushing still helps skin health

Spring De-Shedding Is Just As Important As De-Matting

Spring is shedding season.

Even if your dog doesn’t look tangled, that undercoat is loosening right now. If it sits trapped under the top coat, it:

  • Compacts into tight mats
  • Increases shedding in your home
  • Blocks airflow to the skin
  • Makes your dog hotter and uncomfortable

This is why our de-shedding treatments are so important this time of year.

A proper de-shed:

✔ Removes loose undercoat safely
✔ Reduces heavy shedding at home
✔ Prevents matting before it starts
✔ Keeps the coat breathable and healthy

Think of it as a seasonal reset for the coat.

If your dog is blowing coat right now, this is the time to add it.

How Add-Ons Help Prevent Matting

Certain grooming add-ons significantly reduce mat formation between visits:

Conditioning Treatments – Improve coat slip and hydration
De-shedding Services – Remove loose undercoat before it tangles
Brush-Out Add-Ons – Extra time spent preventing problem areas

These services protect comfort and help maintain longer styles safely.

Muddy paws at the back door again?
A good muddy mat by the door can be a lifesaver. It absorbs moisture before it works its way up the legs and into the coat, and saves your floors too.

And remember: brushing only works if you’re getting all the way down to the skin, not just fluffing the top.

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to do a quick demo at your next appointment.

Matting isn’t just a grooming issue, it’s a comfort issue.

When brushing and professional care work together, your dog stays comfortable, mobile, and happy year-round.
